Great Hall - Facing North |
You enter Woodburn through the front door directly into the Great Hall. Immediately, you will notice the exceptional breadth of the hall. It extends from the north door (main entrance) to the south door with an open pine staircase running the entire three floors on the south end. You will also notice the fine molding on the walls and ceiling.
The wide front door is actually a Dutch door (a door divided horizontally across the middle) which is a rather rare feature in a colonial home, and the windows in the hall include window seats. Portraits in this room include Mr. Kensey Johns, Mrs. Kensey Johns, Willard Hall, Mrs. Carvel, Mrs. Terry, Mrs. Lillian Peterson, Mrs. Tribbitt, Mrs. du Pont and Mrs. Carper.

Drawing Room |
On the north side of the building, you will find the Drawing Room with its beautiful paneling, large windows, French doors and high ceiling. The molding, which starts in the Great Hall, continues in this room with pediments over the doors and on the fireplace wall. There are two portraits currently displayed in this room of Captain Thomas Macdonough, U.S. and Delaware Hero of the War of 1812, and U.S. Senator Martin Waltham Bates, former owner of Woodburn. The French doors, shown to the right, were added later. Beyond the doors, there is a small sitting porch. This room is primarily used for entertaining.

Dining Room |
On the south side of Woodburn, there is the Dining Room, which also displays finely crafted paneling and molding as in the Drawing Room but more restrained. Past and present residents of the home hold state and community dinners in this beautiful room. The Dining Room and Drawing Room are connected by a doorway, and a door also leads from the Dining Room out onto the south lawn, where guests can enjoy the gardens. Portraits in this room include Caesar Augustus Rodney, nephew of Caesar Rodney, and Gunning Bedford, Jr., Delaware Framer of the U.S. Constitution. |
